But i am scared that he will kill the small one ..
if i buy one should i buy a different cage for it ... and put it right next to the other hamster..
ps
i really need help.
I want to buy anther hamster?
hamsters are solitary animals, they actually enjoy being by themselves...in the wild they only time they get together with another one is to mate and then they leave.
If you want to get another one, get a different cage...put the cages next to each other and see how they interact between the cages...after a couple of days (or when they seem like they would get along) take them out to play together for 10-30 minutes...you'll know right then if they will get along or not. If they do get along do that for a couple of days...then put them in the cage for an hour and WATCH them...some hamsters can get terratorial...then just up the time if everytihng goes well
but remember there's a 50-50 chance they won't get along and will have to be seperated
Reply:If you have a Syrian hamster, often called the "Teddy Bear Hamster", the answer is "no". Syrian hamsters are solitary, if you try to keep two together one will eventually kill the other. If, on the other hand, you have Campbells dwarf Russian, or Winter White Siberian hamsters the answer is "usually". If you buy a pair of young hamster siblings from the pet store then they will most likely be fine. If your dwarf hamster has been on it's own for a while then it is much less likely to accept new company. I do know of one case where a older male who had lived alone for almost a year was introduced to a young female and they now have babies of their own.
Reply:if it is a Syrian hamster, then no. Syrian hamsters are meant to be alone. if they have another kind of hamster in the same cage then they will kill it. u only can with two dwarf hamsters bought at the exact same time. yes u should buy it a different cage for it but i don't think that u should put them next to each other. dwarf hamsters are active and small, but are meaner than Syrain hamsters and if u get a dwarf hamster, and get a wired cage, make sure the spaces are small enough so that that it will not be able to escape the cage.
Reply:If your old hamster is a Syrian, you can not house another hamster with it - not even another Syrian. They are solitary creatures and may not appreciate another friend they can see through the cage bars.
Unknown small hamster - its likely a dwarf variety - different species ALL need different cages.
Reply:Yes, the bigger hamster will probably kill the smaller hamster. So buy a separate cage for the smaller one.
