I have a Red Oscar and wanting to get anther oscar as well is this a good idea?

The Oscar I have is around 4.5" to 5" I have had him for aroung 2 or 3months. He is tanked with a blood parrot fish, a sucker and a little cichlid. They all live fine together, but I was wanting to get a 2nd Oscar I heard that this wasn't a good idea. If I do get another one is it best to get a Red Oscar or can I get a different kind?

It's not a good idea.

Oscars, like most cichlids, are not friends with each other, and two will not share a tank - they will split it and fight over it. The way to keep 2 Oscars in a tank is as a mated pair, in which case you must go through the proper motions of establishing one (starting off with several Oscars, waiting until a pair forms, and then removing the rest). Just shove a second O in there and you'll have aggression and fighting. If you decide to try and achieve a pair, then you should have at lest a 75 gallon aquarium for them. Of course, even for 1 Oscar you should have a 75 gallon tank - at least 50 anyway.

As it is the chances are that little cichlid won't live fine with your Oscar forever - cichlids get more territorial and more aggressive as they grow and mature, and yours are just babies. New world cichlids are meant to be kept in species tanks, not mixed cichlid tanks, despite the latter being the popular way to keep them, just like stuffy little bowls are the most popular way to keep goldfish, yet completely wrong too.
Reply:if you are wanting to get another Oscar you might need a bigger tank.i would also suggest taking the other fish out.Oscars grow really fast and they will eat other fish.Oscars are in the peruana family and eat meat. They will find your other fish as a quite tasty snack. any breed of Oscars can be kept together, but they will grow to the size of your tank and the bad thing is they dont stop growing.in about 5 to 6 years you might find a fish about the size of a large bluegill.if they get this big you will need a bigger tank or you will need to build a outdoor pond for them.Good luck
Reply:How big is your tank? You will need a rather large tank to house all these fish. And if you do get another Oscar, there is no guarantee that will get along, but your chances will be better if the tank is large.

Also rearranging the decor helps with any territorial issues.
Reply:you need at least a 175 gallon tank for all the fish you will have (assuming you add the 2nd oscar) becuase the oscar and pleco (sucker fish) need 100 gallons, and its 50 gallons per oscar AFTER THE FIRST (the first one is 75 gallons), and the parrot needs 25 gallons, so a 175 gallon tank minimum is needed.
Reply:if you keep the water clean, its ok,,,i have had 4 oscars in a 50 gallon....i did 3 water changes a week, thats my secret,,, i have done this for years....oh and good pellet food is key....
