What causes albino plant formation in anther culture?
Anther culture is basically the regeneration of haploid plants from immature pollen. Typically, fertilization in plants does not involve transfer of organelles such as the chloroplast and thus the mechanisms for functional plastid transfer are poorly developed in pollen (although they do have them, of course). In regeneration of the plant from an anther, there are specific genes that favor chloroplast stability, but the low number of plastids in the cells and the differences in the stability of the chromosome in the plastids results in plants that contain big DNA deletions in the plastid chromosome (chloroplasts have their own chromosome and encode some, but not all, of their own proteins). The plastids lacking critical genes are non-green and result in albino plants forming at high frequency.
